A little mental maths
Find the missing answer.
Two mental arithmetic questions from today’s Brisk challenge. Same questions for everyone, new pair at midnight UTC.
Find the missing answer.
Find the missing number.
Brisk’s maths questions use everyday arithmetic: adding two-digit numbers, finding a missing factor, keeping a running total in your head. They are designed to be answered without paper in around fifteen seconds each. Accuracy counts first, so it is better to be sure than to be fast.
If you want a longer session, the mental maths trainer gives you sixty seconds of questions at your chosen level, and the practice guide explains the left-to-right and rounding methods that make these questions quicker.
Two randomised trials in healthy older adults found that regularly solving simple arithmetic improved processing speed and executive function on untrained tests. The effects were modest and the sessions were short, which is exactly the shape of a daily puzzle. We summarise both trials, and their limits, in our note on mental maths and the brain.
